[OZTL_NET] ipad use in the library during lunchtime

Hi Alice,
I have upwards of 70 students in the library at lunch maybe half playing games on the standalone computers. Our school students do not have ipads and netbooks in years 9 to 12 which I might add is working brilliantly. We kept hubs throughout the school for these students and lend out netbooks occasionally.
However, last year I implemented a no computers on Fridays in the library. (unless school work) I went and upgraded all my board games- lots of uno and rummukub, chess and others and uploaded lots of funny videos music to our TV screen.
I did not have one complaint from students, they love Fridays! They love playing teachers and winning! One of the boys who is an obsessive computer games player and said to me very enthusiastically "I wish it was games day every day!"
Small steps!

Today at The Book Chook, courtesy of Walker Books and the Shaun the Sheep movie, I am giving away two prize packs. Each pack consists of 7 books and a movie ticket (admit two).

While I will not claim that the books are great literature, what they are is potentially engaging for young fans of Shaun! I have read them all, and I’m impressed with the effort made to make them engaging while still promoting the movie. Range of formats: board book, picture book, activity books, junior novels, a chapter book for kids 8+.

Read more about it at The Book Chook. It’s easy to enter if you’re interested.

Dear OzTL-Netters

Quite pleasing news to hear that the Egmont USA list will be joining Lerner Publishing Group.

Adam Lerner is following in his father's footsteps in building a publishing house focussed on children's and YA reading skills and interests.
Minneapolis is a centre of educational publishing in the USA - quite astonishing number of authors, and more importantly, literacy focussed and trained editors.

Hi all,

Many thanks

Hi Everyone,

I am wondering if anyone has any suggestions for websites suitable for primary age students to obtain/copy safe and free images.

At school we are currently using iPads and lots of Apps that require uploading images for the students to then add text or voice over.

I see a great opportunity here to teach them about copyright of images however I am having trouble finding good websites to use.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Sarah

Hi All,

I have been asked by the Powers that Be to find some information on Reading Programs that are being run fairly successfully in other schools. The criteria is for it to be able to be used across Middle School and to have some method of testing or obtaining results or data on student levels, preferably being able to gain this data during class in some way

I don't think that we have formally used a program here before as we have had extra staff who could take each student and work with them to gain an idea of their reading levels - however, we are short staffed and those with the experience have left or retired, so it becomes a question of everyone working across the board, in class, on the same program. Or at least that is what I understand from the request.

If anyone has something that they worked with or know to be useful, could you please respond off list please? I will pass all information onto Senior staff, and if requested, am happy to compile a hit if anyone would like one.

Many thanks

Hi Sarah
Back when I was Kay Cantwell I created a resource which I used with Year 4 students to introduce them to copyright concepts including creative commons:
https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/15E_chaWVl3ef6pfkMRYVCQNacIE3ur24Cv386pl67ig/edit?usp=sharing
You are welcome to use! Also I have put together a wiki which has lots of copyright and CC information all located in one place here: http://copyrightandcopyleft.wikispaces.com/Home+-+Welcome+to+Copyright+and+Copyleft

I hope you find this useful. I agree with Barbara; teach about Copyright early, and teach about Creative Commons!!
Have a great afternoon :).

I use the Portico Good reading guide for thoughtful reviews and highly recommend it. For a small annual subscription one can access reviews across all ages from 0-199.
Well worth it.

Hi everyone,

I was wondering if I could get some advice from my fellow teacher librarians.

The assistant principal at my school is concerned that many students (mostly the boys) are too obsessed with their ipads. The boys play games on it during the entire recess and lunch time in the library. I have observed them skipping lunch and are also not getting enough exercise or fresh air outside. They will sit 45 mins straight on the library sofas with their ipads.

I would like to ask if any of you have had a similar problem and how you dealt with it? Or just any ideas on what I should do to get the boys not to play on their ipads anymore? We have plenty of board games and books in the library but not very utilised at lunch time.

Any help would be greatly appreciated for a newbie!

And truth be known Alison, they are probably playing with them during class as well. Have set days in the library where things happen.

Monday - reading corners - student can only read F in the library - can be ebooks or interactive Fiction books. May do storytelling here or storyreading aloud as well. Can also do study and use the OPACs.

Tuesday - electronic GameDay - play to their hearts content. Can also do study and use the OPACs.

Wednesday - Game on - board games and puzzles (have a jigsaw out for anyone to do at any time - including staff), no electronic games. Can also do study and use the OPACs.

Soap Day - may have a video/clickview/series of useful YouTube videos running. Can also do study and use the OPACs.

Mufti day - anything goes. Could do maker spaces here or again have this running all the time in a designated space.

This way they get 2 days a week when they can play on their ipads in the library. Need to remember that gaming is also improving literacy skills - depends on the type of games they are playing.

:)

I had set up my reading lists on Pinterest last year so students could view our titles by genre. However, this year Pinterest is making people sign up if they wish to view them and I can't expect my students to do that. Does anyone have suggestions for a similar site that does the same thing and is easy for students to access?

Thanks,
